The Windhover
I caught this morning morning's minion, king-
dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate's heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, – the achieve of, the mastery of the thing!
Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!
No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,

Ten things (+ one) I could do without (I do try hard to be tolerant)
1. Most popular music (country-western, rap (especially rap), rock, easy listening, soul)
2. Dogs
3. Starbuck's
4. Americanization of cultures, from the Middle East to France to Asia and Africa, including narcissism and exhibitionism and measuring sucess by popularity (Twitter, and other "social" media) and money
5. American speech patterns, including clang of dipthongs & nasality, after Walt Whitman,...ebonics...Cantonese...Spanish. (Thank God for French, RP, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin --oftentimes--, and other languages not customarily or usually shouted or screamed).
6. Loud conversation in public spaces
7. American television, cable or otherwise (related to #6)
8. Seahawks, Sonics, etc. This amounts to being unpatriotic, I recognize.
9. Exaggerated or unfounded accusations of racism, or sly or not-so-sly appeals to liberal white guilt
10. Western-style consumerism, which I admittedly indulge in more often than I would like to admit
11. Meanness, cruelty, one-sidedness, and prejudice, e.g., The Stranger
Ten things left to do in life
(3) Experience my cats, the life, moment to moment, of my cats.
(4) Re-reading Wuthering Heights.
(5) Seeing a production of "Long Day's Journey Into Night"
