As an Amherst grad of 1975, I can say that I feel solidarity with the alumni who have taken steps to voice their dismay at the overweening "political correctness" that pervades this campus and so many others across the country. Among so many liberals, there seems to be some great satisfaction in "nailing to the cross" white men--across the board, as an entire group, which I surmise is due to liberal guilt that stems from a heavy Christian sense of guilt and shame. In this case, I find it is excessive and destructive. I am a racial minority myself and do indeed feel what I consider appropriate anger at those who would dictate their consciences to their teachers, fellow peers, and administrators, all in, ironically, the name of free speech. That is where the shame should lie. I applaud those alumni who will not submit to the coercive tactics of those who have been so ingrained with the notion that others, both in the past and present, are to blame for their pervasive unhappiness and perceived station in life.
